Penfolds Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2007
Winery: Penfolds
Region: South Australia
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz
Vintage: 2007
Your Wine Guy says:
A stunning wine with great power and finesse, built to last many years in the cellar. A complex combination of blackberry, blueberry, mocha and spice greet the nose. Well integrated spicy oak and layers of black fruit characters greet the palate; this wine has excellent intensity of flavour and aroma.

Critics say:
Great colour, and as befits the vintage, is an intense and complex wine of great breed; it has many layers of blackberry, blackcurrant, liquorice, earth and chocolate, the powerful tannins in balance, the oak likewise. Screwcap. 14.5% alc.

The Penfold’s Bin 389 legend continues. Say what you will about Penfold’s and/or Foster’s … Bin 389 has soared on regardless. This year it’s a blend of cabernet (52 per cent) with Shiraz (48 per cent), matured in only twenty-two per cent new oak. Fantastic attack of flavour, grip through the finish, balance and harmony. Complete Australian red wine. Bold but restrained, herbal and vanillin but full of powerful, ripe, assertively dark fruit. The finish is long and satisfying and cabernet’s rugged control keeps the wine’s sense of ‘flow’ strict and focussed.
95 Points Drink: 2012 - 2024 Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front
Roasted coconut and vanilla, dark berries, aniseed/mint - good smelling wine and typically Penfolds. It’s mid-weight with meaty toasty flavours and nice set of lightly chewy tannins (good work done here). Well balanced and good to drink (even now) with a toasty savoury finish. It’s a wine that delivers a lot of satisfaction and plenty of 389ishness (to coin a new phrase). Played well, done good. Top result.
93 Points Drink : 2012 - 2024 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
The winemaker says:
Colour: Deep, dark red, with an impenetrable core.
Nose: Brooding, yet compliantly permitting noticeable oak to propel dark fruits from the glass, unveiling wafts of stewed Christmas pudding (a mix of dates / sultana / fig) beneath. High notes of anise, licorice and an element of scented talc tussle with more grounded and complex savoury & cold meat aromatics. Gasping for air !
Palate: Youthful, bright dark fruits hover over a base of stewed rhubarb & quince paste. Integrated oak serves to tighten the palate rather than impart any flavour, although upon sitting, coffee-ground and barrel ferment nuances arise & linger...Peter Gago
Winery/Label Information:
Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfold’s Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange' or 'Baby Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange.
First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfold’s solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Penfold's Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has earned a reputation among wine consumers and collectors as an Australian classic. With all its ripe fruit, richness and generosity, the wine has been much loved over several generations of wine drinkers.
Predominantly a Barossa Valley wine at one point, the Bin 389 is now a multi-district South Australian blend with fruit sourced from the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Clare Valley, and more recently, Penfold's new vineyards in Robe and Bordertown. Over the last 40 years Bin 389 has developed a strong identity for its consistency, reliability and value. Wine consumers buy it because it's delicious to drink, even when first released. Collectors appreciate it because the wine over-delivers.
