Complete Australian red wine. Bold but restrained, herbal and vanillin but full of powerful, ripe, assertively dark fruit. The finish is long and satisfying and cabernet’s rugged control keeps the wine’s sense of ‘flow’ strict and focussed. 95 Points Drink: 2012 - 2024 Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front   Roasted coconut and vanilla, dark berries, aniseed/mint - good smelling wine and typically Penfolds. It’s mid-weight with meaty toasty flavours and nice set of lightly chewy tannins (good work done here). Well balanced and good to drink (even now) with a toasty savoury finish. It’s a wine that delivers a lot of satisfaction and plenty of 389ishness (to coin a new phrase). Played well, done good. Nose: Brooding, yet compliantly permitting noticeable oak to propel dark fruits from the glass, unveiling wafts of stewed Christmas pudding (a mix of dates / sultana / fig) beneath. High notes of anise, licorice and an element of scented talc tussle with more grounded and complex savoury & cold meat aromatics. Gasping for air ! Palate: Youthful, bright dark fruits hover over a base of stewed rhubarb & quince paste.
