The Gables has all the characters of a classic Coonawarra dry red. Selected parcels of premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz have created a full-bodied yet supple wine. Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Shiraz (25%). The Cabernet Sauvignon provides the blackcurrant and unmistakable Coonawarra cigar box character. The Shiraz then flows through offering the 'juiciness'. Colour: Deep red with garnet edges. Nose: Lifted plums and dark berry fruit, backed by subtle mint and cedary oak. Palate: Up-front blackberry Cabernet fruit is followed by juicy berry Shiraz. Chocolate/Mocha-like oak fills out the seams finishing with fine grained tannins. A Coonawarra rival to Penfolds Bin 389? Perhaps, and nearly half the price. Cabernet, especially from the Coonawarra can be luscious, dark and rich yet have a lean or hollow middle palate. Shiraz fills this void beautifully, making the wine more complete, more balanced. Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world famous strip of 'Terra Rossa' soil that produces fruit of an exceptionally high quality, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.   Today Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the Coonawarra's pre-eminent wine producer, with the largest holding of the region's best and oldest vineyards. The terra rossa soil and cool climate produce low yields of intensely flavoured grapes, and the resulting wines have long been regarded as some of Australia's greatest, known for their richness and longevity. Wynns Coonawarra Estate, under Sue Hodder who has been Chief Winemaker since 1998, produces six wines every year.
