Wynn's Coonawarra Chardonnay
Winery: Wynn’s
Region: Coonawarra
Variety: Chardonnay
Your Wine Guy says:
The Chardonnay is of mid weight with good intensity, showing cool the climate fruit characters like melon, citrus and nectarine amongst a well-balanced use of oak. This wine was matured for six months using French oak.
90 Points YWG
Critics say:
"A full rich style, with plenty of toasty oak framing ripe peach and fig fruit; quite lively on the palate, with tangy acidity cleaning up the finish. Screwcap. 13% alc."
89 James Halliday Wine Companion 2010
"A juicy Chardonnay slightly grassy, green edged and Sauvignon Blanc-like expression of quince, pineapple and tropical fruit."
Jeremy Oliver The Australian Wine Annual 2010
The winemaker says:
Colour: Pale straw with flashes of green - a bright youthful appearance.
Nose: Aromas of citrus and passionfruit with complex notes of cashew and honeysuckle.
Palate: Generous and smooth, delivering citrus and white nectarine flavours that dominate. There is spicy, subtle oak that gives structure and complexity. This wine is delicate yet flavoursome with a fine acid structure, showcasing Coonawarra's cool climate elegance. Sue Hodder
Winery/Label Information:
First produced in 1981, Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay demonstrates that Coonawarra can produce fine whites as well as fine reds, in a similar manner to Bordeaux.
As a young wine it typically displays melon, fig and citrus fruit flavours finely balanced with vanillin oak. The style has been refined since the early 1990s and the impact of oak-derived flavours has been reduced.
Oak plays an important but subtle role in this chardonnay with the varietal characters enhanced by an array of winemaking techniques to ensure complexity. As a young wine it displays a rich amalgam of melon, fig and citrus fruit finely balanced with vanillin oak. There are hints of butterscotch and roasted nuts from malolactic fermentation and barrel maturation. Bottle ageing is rewarded with increased richness, and peaches, cream and buttered toast characters intensify.
