Winery: Henschke Region: Mount Edelstone Vineyard, Eden Valley Variety: Shiraz Vintage: 2007 Your Wine Guy says: We are always impressed with the quality of old vine fruit in Australia. Henschke’s Mt Edelstone Shiraz is sourced from a single block of 94 year old vines in the Eden Valley. The 2007 is deep crimson in the glass. Deliciously complex nose with plums and black berry fruits with some aniseed notes, some vanillin oak, and spicy touches of pepper and mint. As usual, the Edelstone is rich and luscious, with fleshy fruit, a complex and textured palate appears showing great depth and structure finishing with long velvety soft tannins. Extreme climatic conditions have resulted in a reduction of Henschke’s already limited single vineyard output, making the 2007 very scarce in quantity. 95 Points YWG Drink to 2021+ Critics say: Vivid colour; it has a rich and deep bouquet with licorice, spice, tar and black fruit aromas; the palate extremely rich and complex, layered fruit with plush tannins, yet is supple; very long finish to an outstanding '07 wine. 95 PointsJames Halliday, The Weekend Australian Magazine "Tasting alongside the 2006 Hill of Grace probably did this wine no favours, so I’m bearing this in mind with the score. Truffle, blackcurrant/blackberry, some herb garden fragrance and good oak contributing a little cinnamon spice. It’s full of sweet blackcurrant fruit and spice, but feels a little stewed with a slight greenness and rustiness to the tannins. Toasty oak smooths out the flavour profile. I’m not mad about the flavours (a personal thing) but it’s a nice enough wine, if not a little awkward.” 89 Points Drink 2011 to 2017 Gary Walsh The Wine Front April 2010 The winemaker says: Colour: Deep crimson/black in colour. Nose: A delightfully fragrant bouquet of anise, plum, sage and pepper with blackberry and vanilla hints adding complexity. Palate: The palate is lush and fleshy in texture with elegant fine, velvety tannins contributing to the wine’s length. Great vintage drink to 2022. – Henschke Wines Winery/Vintage Information: 100% 95-year-old-vine Shiraz grown in the Eden Valley wine region. The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912. The 2007 vintage shaped up to be another high quality year but with significantly reduced yields in Eden Valley. The highly publicised drought of 2006 was reported as the worst ever. February was recorded as the hottest for 100 years, which brought the already reduced crop to an earlier ripening phase. Matured in 90% new, 10% seasoned French (67%) and American (33%) hogsheads for 21 months prior to blending and bottling. – Henschke Wines
