Winery: Penfolds
Region: South Australia
Variety: Riesling

Your Wine Guy says:
The ‘Autumn’ label was once used by legendary Grange creator Max Schubert so that he could raise the profile of Penfolds to the respected level that their reds enjoy. The Autumn Riesling shows classic varietal characters on the nose with fresh citrus, lime and some floral, blossom-like notes. The Autumn Riesling is, like its stablemate, a classy offering from the Koonunga range. Vibrant citrus flavours of lemon, lime are combined with crisp slightly minerally acidity. Although it could last a number of years in the cellar, this wine is presenting very well at the moment and can definitely be enjoyed now.

Critics say:

It’s super floral in its fragrance – and indeed, it has a couple of percent of Traminer in it – as was a customary practice in the 1970s. Great idea. It’s mostly, but not entirely, made with Eden Valley grapes.
Lovely fresh limey flavour. Good acid but not too challenging. Beautiful drink. Cellar door and on-premise only. Gorgeous elegance. Outstanding value. Limes and fresh flowers, a bit of textural softness and very good length. Love the package, love the wine.

The winemaker says:

Colour: Bright pale gold with lime green hues.
Nose: The nose displays lifted florals and citrus blossom with some alluring sweet musk scents.
Palate: Florals follow onto an impressive palate with faint lavender notes. A fine talc acid structure gives great length of flavour and 'linearity'. - Peter Gago, Penfold’s Chief Winemaker

Winery/Label Information:

During the 1970’s Max Schubert (original maker of Grange) wanted to raise the profile of Penfold’s white wines to receive the same respect that their red enjoyed, one of his successes was the Autumn Riesling.

Penfold’s Koonunga Hill has established itself as one of Australia's favourite names in premium wine. The collection's reputation has been built upon its quality, value and consistency, dating back to the original red release from 1976. Some of Penfold’s finest Riesling parcels in the early 1970s were bottled under the Autumn label and the 2008 Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling acknowledges the original 1972, by closely adhering to the original packaging with a fitting 'retro' label. The Autumn Label now sits in the Koonunga Hill tier and like its siblings, it aims to deliver the quality, value and consistency that Koonunga Hill is renowned for.
This wine is bottled immediately after blending to retain fruit freshness. – Penfold’s Wines
