Winery: St Hallett
Region: Barossa
Variety: Shiraz

Your Wine Guy says:
St Hallett is blessed with a wealth of concentrated old vine fruit parcels which are very well displayed here. In the glass it is a dark inky purple colour, a mass of fruit greets the nose, complex offerings of liquorice, blackberry jam, toasty vanillin oak. There is a fantastic full-bodied palate is rich with blackberry, plum, mocha and classic Shiraz pepper and spice. Outstanding example of old vine fruit concentration.

Critics say:

Red-purple; a fragrant bouquet leads into a particularly well-balanced medium-bodied palate with lush, but jammy, blackberry and raspberry fruit, ripe tannins and balanced oak. A welcome return to top form. Screw cap. 14.5% alc.

The winemaker says:
Colour: Deep Crimson red
Nose: Powerful lifted aromas of dark chocolate and mocha are intertwined with the soft, underlying dark berry fragrance.
Palate: The 2006 Old Block Shiraz shows that classic Old Block character –justswirlingin the glass gives one that sense of comfort and enormous brooding complexity. An excellent vintage for Barossa Valley Shiraz, the palate offers rich dark fruits, blackcurrants with a chocolatey texture, sensual tannins and persistence of flavours. These characters are elegantly entwined with the underlying Eden Valley Shiraz eucalypt flavours and fine tannins. - St Hallett Wines

Winery/Label Information:
An acknowledged icon of the Barossa, St Hallett Old Block is an elegant and seamless Shiraz widely recognised as world class. Derived purely from one cropping all the wines of 60 to over 100 years of age, Old Block Shiraz is by its very nature exclusive. Unique sites in the warmer Barossa Valley contribute a rich foundation while the adjacent high altitude and cooler Eden Valley provide seamless tannins and lifted aromatics. The meticulous nurturing of and respect for these old wines flows through to the care and attention given in the winery. – St Hallett

Some historical perspective helps one appreciate these wines all the more. Next time you pour a glass of the Old Block, consider this; around the time that some of the vines that grow the grapes for this wine were planted, the Suez Canal was opened, a new speed record between Port Melbourne and England was set (61 days 11 hours), not long after that four cylinder internal combustion engines were invented and some French guy (Pasteur) discovered 'germs'. It's not hard to see why these types of wines continue to be collected and heralded as living treasures; they are very much a part of our world’s viticultural history. – YWG
