Winery: Wynn’s
Region: Coonawarra
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot

Your Wine Guy says:
The ‘Red Stripe’ label encapsulates all the elegance of Coonawarra fruit in a wine that drinks brilliantly when relatively young. Cabernet provides dark berry flavour, and structure, whilst the Shiraz imparts a spicy complexity and richness. Merlot then adds some softness to a finely structured and supple wine, that is showing some dark berry, ripe plum characters and spicy fruit flavours combined with soft, toasty vanillin oak.Wynns ‘Red Stripe’ Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz Merlot has always represented great reliability when it comes to value for money andflavour.

Critics say:

“Solid colour; has an abundance of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit softened by a dash of plum and spice; the tannin structure is excellent, oak in its due place; one of the best for some years. Screwcap. 14% alc.”
Rating 94 PointsDrink 2020 James Halliday Wine Companion

“Youthful, slightly jubey, red and black fruit, aniseed and light cedar oak - a bit floral and peppery too. Medium bodied with a nicely balanced squirt of red fruit and milk chocolate plus some savoury tobacco flavours adding interest. Tannins are fine grained and lightly grippy, and the finish is even and fairly long. It’s as good an example of the red stripe as I can remember, and should look better again when it settles down a bit, hence the plus sign on the rating.”

The winemaker says:
Colour: Deep ruby with brick red tinges.
Nose: A fragrant, slightly gamey nose with fresh, ripe berry fruit and spice with well-integrated oak.
Palate: The palate is highlighted by the upfront, bright cassis fruit flavours of Cabernet. Shiraz shows intense black pepper from the warmer year and the Merlot contributes softness and mint to the finish. All up a complete wine that offers both complexity and approachability to create an ideal wine for a wide range of occasions. -Sue Hodder

Winery/Label Information:
Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world famous strip of 'Terra Rossa' soil that produces fruit of an exceptionally high quality, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the Coonawarra's pre-eminent wine producer, with the largest holding of the region's best and oldest vineyards. The terra rossa soil and cool climate produce low yields of intensely flavoured grapes, and the resulting wines have long been regarded as some of Australia's greatest, known for their richness and longevity.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, under Sue Hodder who has been Chief Winemaker since 1998, produces six wines every year. In vintages where the quality of grapes is exceptional, two flagship reds are made, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Michael Shiraz.
