Wynns Davis Vineyard Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery: Wynns Coonawarra Estate
Region: Davis Vineyard, Coonawarra
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 2008
Your Wine Guy says:
Wynns Davis vineyard is an outstanding vineyard whose fruit is often a component of the flagship John Riddoch Cabernet. The vineyard is the second oldest in Coonawarra planted back in 1957.
When I spoke with Sue Hodder (Wynns winemaker) in July 2011 she described the Davis vineyard as her absolute favourite of all of Coonawarra’s extensive vineyards. The vineyard itself actually lies at the end of her street which just happens to be, of course, John Riddoch Way.
This was perhaps my favourite of all of the new Wynns releases for drinking over the next, well, I don’t think I’ll be able to keep away from it for as long as it will cellar. I scored the Riddoch higher only because of its extra ageing potential.
Deep, near opaque purple core with a medium purple rim. The nose is incredibly alluring and tempts you with intense and youthful characters of black fruits with delightful toasted oak notes mingling with that archetypal Coonawarra mint. The palate shows outstanding depth and purity of fruit flavours with those black fruits showing again in decisive strength – you can definitely see why Sue Hodder rates this as her favourite vineyard in the entire Coonawarra region. Beautifully integrated oak and firm but fine tannins make for a very long and strong finish.

Critics say:
“Deep purple; this wine immediately stamps its authority, no surprise given that the cabernet vines were planted in 1957 (the second-oldest in Coonawarra) and completely rejuvenated in ’03. Its surging blackcurrant fruit is supported by tannins and French oak in perfect balance.”
96 Points Drink 2030 James Halliday Wine Companion 2012
“South Australia's Coonawarra is one of the classic Cabernet-producing regions of Australia, once described as the 'Medoc of the Southern Hemisphere' and, truly, Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon can be disarmingly like Bordeaux when young. Recently Coonawarra has experienced four outstanding or above average vintages in a row. This gift of nature has given the ammunition this region needs to bring back focus to its wonderful Cabernets.”
Andrew Caillard MW
The winemaker says:
This wine was matured in 50% new French oak, and 50% one year old French oak.
Colour: Dark rich colour.
Nose: Dark, robust blackberry fruit meshed with a mix of cocoa powder and dusty oak.
Palate: Rich and textured, a great depth of dark, ripe blackberry fruit and chocolate flavour with a lingering of smoky spice and briary nuances to finish.- Sue Hodder
Winery Information:
Each vintage Wynns select a premium parcel from a single vineyard to bottle separately. The Davis Block 5 Vineyard was planted in 1957 and is one of the oldest Cabernet blocks in Coonawarra. Historically a major contributor to Wynns flagship John Riddoch Cabernet. Cuttings from the Davis vineyard have been used to expand high quality cabernet planting in regions all around Australia.
The Davis Block 5 vineyard is the second oldest in Coonawarra.
When I spoke with Sue Hodder (Wynns winemaker) she described the Davis Block 5 vineyard as her absolute favourite of all of Coonawarra’s extensive vineyards. The vineyard actually lies at the end of her street which, of course, is John Riddoch Way.
Previous single vineyard Wynns releases include the 2001 Harold Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2003 and 2004 Johnson's Block Shiraz Cabernet, the 2005 Messenger Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 Alex 88 Cabernet Sauvignon and the Glengyle Cabernet Sauvignon 2007.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world famous strip of 'Terra Rossa' soil that produces fruit of an exceptionally high quality, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the Coonawarra's pre-eminent wine producer, with the largest holding of the region's best and oldest vineyards. The terra rossa soil and cool climate produce low yields of intensely flavoured grapes, and the resulting wines have long been regarded as some of Australia's greatest, known for their richness and longevity.
Sue Hodder has been Chief Winemaker at Wynns Coonawarra Estate since 1998. In vintages where the quality of grapes is exceptional, two flagship reds are made, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Michael Shiraz.
