Drappier
There are several points of distinction about Charles de Gaulle’s favourite House, Champagne Drappier. Firstly, it is a relatively small family owned House in contrast to the large Houses dominating the Champagne landscape. Secondly, it is situated in the Aube region in the south of Champagne. The Aube is in fact closer to Burgundy than Reims and produces some intensely flavoured Pinot noirs. In past times most grande marques snubbed this area relegating it to secondary rank. Today every large House is looking for land in southern Champagne to source fuller bodied pinot noirs.
The Drappier family has long been planted in this area and now own 100 hectares of the best vineyards around. André and Michel Drappier have a firm philosophy, evolved over eight generations, to use minimum sulphur. The company also extracts a remarkably low yield from its vineyards and takes an approach to the soil that lets the ‘terroir’ speak. Drappier is ranked by Champagne authority Tom Stevenson as the most dynamic independent producer of the Aube.
Wines available from Your
Wine Guy include:
