A passionate long time collector of Grange has decided that he can no longer keep up with his extensive Grange collection and Your Wine Guy has been given the privilege of finding a new home(s) for what is the largest single collection of Australia’s most important and most famous wine – Penfolds Grange – that we have seen outside Penfolds cellars. This collection is an excursion back through the history and rise of the Australian wine industry. The collection begins with the famous 1955 vintage which is the vintage that really put Penfolds and Grange, indeed the Australian wine industry, on the world stage – there are 4 of these in the collection. The Penfolds Grange collection also includes a number of bottles signed by Max Schubert – the visionary who created Grange – from the vintages of 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964 1965 and 1966. There is also a set of Grange bottles forming an unbroken line of vintages from the last of the ‘Secret/Hidden’ Grange 1959 through to the 2003 release with the total number exceeding 350 bottles. Often of concern with buying older wines is that you do not know the provenance of the wine – you can’t be sure whether it has been stored correctly, with this collection you know that the wines have been very well cellared in this one collectors’ underground cellar simply waiting for the opportunity to get into your glass or your wine rack. Ordering: The line of vintages 1959 – 2003 is being sold as a complete set (45 bottles) and this is indicated in the product description. Grange vintages are to be sold in six bottle cases that can be mixed into any combination you like (excluding the '1959 – 2003 set' and Original 6 bottle Timber cases). Perhaps you would like to get the vintage that you were born or the vintage from when you were married, or even a bottle or two from the year that your child was born – it’s up to you. In Your Wine Guy’s experience, the fill level in the bottle is almost always the best indicator of the quality of the wine inside the bottle and so unless there was a significantly noticeable issue with the label or capsule we have not mentioned it. The wines are described as accurately as can be ascertained by Your Wine Guy at the time, but buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. Ullage Levels: (similar to the Langton's approach) High Fill Level No reduction of wine seems to have occurred since bottling. Into Neck Indicates a tiny reduction of wine due to natural evaporation. This is considered an excellent level for any Grange 7 years or older. Base of Neck Indicates a very small reduction of wine due to natural evaporation. This is considered an excellent level for any Grange 10 years or older. Just Below Base of Neck Indicates a minimal reduction of wine due to evaporation. Considered a very good level in any Grange 15 years or older. Excellent for a Grange over 20 years old. Very High shoulder Indicates a very slight natural reduction of wine due to evaporation through the cork and capsule. A good level in any Grange 15 years or older. A very good level for a Grange over 20 years old. High Shoulder Normal level for any Grange 20 years or older. Good level for Grange 30 years or older. Mid-High Shoulder Indicates a natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through cork and capsule. Not uncommon in Grange 30 years or older. Mid-Shoulder Can indicate a weakening of the cork and as such possibly a potential risk of oxidation. This is not unusual in wines over 40 years old. Certain bottles of Grange from more important, older vintages are often attractive in a collector's cellar.
