Your Wine Guy says:
An incredible red. Upon tasting, a colleague remarked that "in my humble opinion the 2002 Johann must be a near perfect wine”. He didn’t need to be humble, it’s stunning. The pinnacle release from one of the brands that helped make Australian wine world famous. Limited stock.

Sumptuous and bruising, it’s packed with meaty, black and briary fruit amply balanced by sweet, toasty cedar/vanilla oak and firm, presently rather blocky tannins. Dense and deeply layered, with thick, concentrated and profoundly ripened fruit, assertive oak and a robust, drying astringency. Bordering overcooked, it’s actually finely balanced although it is years away from being ready to drink. South Australia.

Can I predict something right off the bat? People might just go slightly gaga over this. It’s a mammoth, motherly, magnificent wine, again too minty but so crushingly, ruinously powerful, and smooth, and persistent, and soft, and classy, and cuddly, that to hell with it - you just have to embrace it. Blackcurrant, gritty tannin, enough density of fruit to stop people in their tracks - this is pretty awesome. Drink: 2007-2019.

The winemaker says:
Colour: Deep crimson with rich purple hues
Nose: The wine shows the delicate integration of spices, black pepper and plum with blackcurrant and red berry, which was achieved through carefully blending only the best Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon parcels. Developed aniseed and licorice notes along with integrated savoury oak give this wine complexity and richness.
Palate: This wine shows enormous depth of fruit, with concentrated ripe black fruits and savoury spice flavours seamlessly
integrated with savoury, charry oak. Well structured tannins give this wine elegance and finesse while still providing a balance with the wine’s intense ripe fruit characters. - Jacob’s Creek Wines
