Winery: Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate
Region: Coonawarra
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 2009

Your Wine Guy says:
Wynns ‘Black Label’ Cabernet Sauvignon has always shown an almost unbelievable reliability when it comes to value for money,
flavour and longevity. The ‘Black Label’ has a very well deserved reputation for outstanding quality under $40 per bottle.

The 2009 is deep red with quite a dark core. The nose needs a little time to open up and then shows somelifted blackcurrant and qualitycedaryoak with the classicCoonawarraminty-nessalong with some blackberry and dark cherry notes. As you would expect, the characters from the nose follow on to the palate with excellent intensity and concentratedflavoursof dark berry fruits with the slightly toasty oak rounding out a great balance between strong fruit and a good tannin structure. Needs a bit more time than the warmer 2008 vintage to really settle those tannins down but will drink well for at least 10 years, if not 20 or more.

The winemaker says:
Colour: Dark rich colour.
Nose: A fragrant nose with blackberry and briary tones and a hint of cigar box.
Palate: A good concentration of ripe, dark berry fruit swathed in serious tannins, backed by classy toasty oak adding complexity. A savoury and succulent wine with a pleasing velvety texture adding length on the finish and suggesting a healthy future in the cellar.
- Sue Hodder

Winery Information:
First produced in 1954 and widely known as 'Black Label', Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has established a reputation for displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is produced from only the top 20-25% of Cabernet fruit available from Wynns Coonawarra Estate. A wine of style and stature and a perennial favourite in auction circles, the 'Black Label' is one of Australia's most collectable wines. It consistently delivers the potential for medium to long-term cellaring. The average vineyard age for Wynns ‘Black Label’ is 32 years. 2009 is the 54th vintage of this legendary wine.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world famous strip of 'Terra Rossa' soil that produces fruit of an exceptionally high quality, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the Coonawarra's pre-eminent wine producer, with the largest holding of the region's best and oldest vineyards. The terra rossa soil and cool climate produce low yields of intensely flavoured grapes, and the resulting wines have long been regarded as some of Australia's greatest, known for their richness and longevity.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, under Sue Hodder who has been Chief Winemaker since 1998, produces six wines every year. In vintages where the quality of grapes is exceptional, two flagship reds are made, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Michael Shiraz.
Single vineyard Wynns releases include the 2001 Harold Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2003 and 2004 Johnson's Block Shiraz Cabernet, the 2005 Messenger Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 Alex 88 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007 Glengyle Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2008 Davis Cabernet Sauvignon.
