Winery Information:
In 1988 when Kym Tolley established Penley Estate, he continued the winemaking heritage of his families, Penfolds and Tolley.
Kym Tolley is a direct descendant of Penfolds founder Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold (Kym’s great- great- great Grandfather) and on his father’s side he is a Tolley, another one of Australia’s pioneering wine families.
The Tolley family wine company began with the purchase of the Phoenix Winemaking & Distilling Company changing the name to Tolley Scott & Tolley (T.S.T) which was to become the leading Brandy producer in Australia. In 1892 the family built a winery in Hope Valley to produce premium table wines from grapes grown on their Adelaide and Barossa vineyards.
Prior to establishing Penley Estate, Kym gained invaluable experience working for Penfolds under the tutorage of Grange creator Max Schubert.
In just over 20 years since Penley Estate was established, they have won an impressive collection of 47 trophies and over 150 gold medals and set new standards in red wine production in Australia.
The Phoenix Cabernet alone has been awarded 11 Trophies, 20 Gold medals, 39 Silver and 86 Bronze during this time.
