Winery: Skillogalee

Region: Clare Valley

Variety: Cabernet, Malbec

Your Wine Guy says:

The Skillogalee Cabernet (85%), Malbec (15%) Rosé is made from estate sourced, dry grown Clare Valley fruit. Low yields in 2010 resulted in wines with very intense fruit character and varietal expression.

The Rosé shows fresh raspberry and cranberry on the nose. The palate is crisp and lively, held together by a fine structure of natural acid and soft tannin balance. Very easy to drink.

92 Points YWG Drink to 2012

Critics say:

James Halliday has awarded Skillogalee a 5 Star rating, an accolade afforded to only 9% of Australia’s wineries.

Halliday describes a 5 Star rating as an:

“Outstanding winery capable of producing wines are very high-quality, and did so this year. Also will usually have at least two wines rated at 94 points or above.”

The winemaker says:

This 2010 Cabernet, Malbec Rose was made from 100% estate sourced, dry grown Clare Valley fruit. All fruit was blended, de-stemmed and chilled to 5oC. To achieve the desirable level of colour and flavour extraction the fruit was left on skins for 16 – 20 hours in the press. The free-run juice and light pressings were then cold settled, racked and fermented cool to express the clean fruit characters of both the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Malbec. This wine is best served chilled, especially during the warmer months and is a great match for most food styles, particularly fresh seafood and contemporary Asian cuisine. - Skillogalee

The family-owned vineyard is managed in accordance with sustainable farming practice, with minimal water usage.

Skillogalee was established in 1970 with the first wines released in 1976. The 1978 dry riesling won major trophies at the Adelaide Wine Show and the National Wine Show. The wines are produced exclusively from grapes grown on their own vineyards.

The vineyards were planted in the early 1970s with the rows planted on the contour in shallow stony soils mainly on steep eastern facing slopes. The vines are hand-pruned and the fruit is mainly hand-picked. Yields are extremely low but the vineyard produces intense flavours and aromas and deep, richly-coloured reds. - Skillogalee
