Winery: Grosset
Region: Springvale Vineyard - Watervale, Clare Valley
Variety: Riesling
Your Wine Guy says:
James Halliday writes “Jeffrey Grosset has assumed the unchallenged mantle of Australia's foremost Riesling maker ... recognised both domestically and internationally.” The 2010 harvest marks the 30th consecutive vintage of the Grosset Watervale Riesling. Picked at the perfect moment to capture a pristine bouquet of lemon and lime blossom and apples. The palate has great structure and persistence, with a little more expression and richness than the 2009. Just brilliant.

Critics say:
“Early in its life, this is showing lime and grapefruit citrus, smells pithy and intense, and has some stony, savoury elements and fine sherbet-like notes too. The palate's dry and uncompromising, with lemon, lime and grapefruit citrus, some musky flavour, and fine, chalky texture - little green apple to close. Trainspotters will love the subtly styled proprietary bottle.”
93 points Nick Stock The Age The Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide
“... it pushes on relentlessly through the mouth, with a bracing surge of mineral-bitten lemon and white pear flavours bonded by the welcomed physicality of a tightening, lengthening extract of somewhat sour-edged, zippy, almost fizzy acids that leave the mouth feeling dry, impressed and dying for more. It's seemingly fuller and richer than some Springvales, but its balancing structure and length pay homage to the pedigree. Once again it seems Mr Grosset can do no wrong with dry riesling. If Australia was riesling, I'd want Jeffrey to be Prime Minister. Drink to 2022.”

The winemaker says:
Colour: Brilliant very pale straw with greenish tinge.
Nose: Lemon, lime blossom aromatics.
Palate: Intense pure tangy lime juice, fine and impeccably focused, powerful and tight with mouth-watering zesty quartz minerality on a bone-dry finish that lingers. Layer after layer of flavour washes over the palate followed by an impeccably balanced, satisfying, taut grip. - Grosset Wines
Winery Information:
Jeffrey Grosset was voted the inaugural Australian Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller WINE in 1998, and is internationally recognised as one of the ‘Top 10 White Winemakers’ (Decanter, UK) and one of the ‘50 Most Influential Winemakers’ (Wine & Spirits, USA) in the world today.
Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. Grosset Wines’ philosophy has remained steadfast over thirty years. The emphasis is on purity of fruit. Vineyards are hand-tended, and each bunch of grapes is harvested at optimum ripeness.   The winemaking process is gentle and uncomplicated.
As he celebrates its thirtieth vintage in 2010, Jeffrey Grosset confidently expects the 'Springvale' Watervale Riesling to become a wine of comparable stature to his Polish Hill.  According to Langton's Australian Fine Wine Guide, 'The Watervale Riesling is a classic Clare style.  If Polish Hill is power and intensity, Watervale is restraint and pure fruit.  It evokes the expectation of a mouth-watering palate and delivers it. - Grosset Wines

Australian wine authority and critic, James Halliday (in Halliday’s Wine Companion), has awarded Grosset a 5 Red Star rating, an accolade afforded to only the top 8% of Australia’s wineries.
Halliday describes the meaning of his 5 Red Star rating as an:
“Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.  Will have at least two wines rated at 94 points or above, and have had a five-star rating for the previous two years.”
