Your Wine Guy says:
Peter Rumball focuses all his outstanding traditional method winemaking talent on producing exceptional sparkling reds from Coonawarra. Spending a minimum of 10 years ageing on lees before release, Rumball’s Vintage Sparkling Shiraz is an absolutely stunning wine. Amazingly intense dark berry fruits, hints of chocolate and great complexity from the bottle age. Made in the same method used in Champagne. Among the best wines we have tasted.

Critics say:

"Festooned with trophies (including National Wine Show ’06) and gold medals on front and back labels - 11 in all between ’04-’08. The wine shows why, for while packed with flavour, is not too oaky nor too sweet. Further time on cork will do it no harm at all."

"As Australian as boomerangs, Sparkling Reds are back in favour. A knight in sparkling red armour, Peter Rumball, began championing the style in the 1980's just when the sparkling red market was floundering in the wake of the Cold Duck debacle. His Rumball SB13 Sparkling Shiraz is sourced from a range of South Australian vineyards to give the base wines both softness and some earthy complexity. Rumball's addition of his coyly described "secretly prepared liqueur" gives the wine a soft, rounded and generous palate lifted by an enthusiastic mousse."
Peter Bourne Australian Gourmet Traveller

"Coonawarra Shiraz is seriously underrated. Made in the bottle, it's the real deal. Dry earth wafts northwards followed by a big mouthful of rich and ripe berry flavours, all laced by some sophisticated dark chocolate. Serious, yet very indulgent. The only reason I like Christmas is the God-given right it gives me to drink sparkling red wine."

2002 vintage available:

The 2002 Coonawarra vintage was the culmination of an excellent season with very high quality wines, but generally lower yields due to a low fruit flowering set. The grape bunches had fewer and smaller berries than normal. Clear skies and warm days in April enabled the fruit to ripen fully whilst maintaining ideal pH and great shiraz characters. This vintage cuvee was elected from Dohnt's vineyard. It was tiraged on 11th December 2002.
1997 Vintage - now sold out
“The grapes for the vintage wine come from a single vintage (as versus the non-vintage wine about which may have some cross vintage wine in the base blend) and so the vintage may vary from year to year and reflect the climate differences of the vineyard. The wine naturally has a strong varietal Shiraz character with a big fruit and tannin finish.
The 1997 Shiraz growing season at Coonawarra began with ideal conditions, However November was very windy during flower set resulting in a reduction of berries.,Hot weather in February followed by a slow and gentle ripening of the grapes resulted in a reduced crop. But the berries were smaller, deep coloured and the quality was excellent.
The grapes for the 1997 vintage came from Dohnt's vineyard at Coonawarra.” – Peter Rumball
Winery Information:
Peter Rumball is an Australian specialist Méthode Champenoise Sparkling Winemaker who led the 1980's renaissance of sparkling red wines. His style has made him famous in Australia. Peter Rumball loves this style so much, Sparkling Red wine is now the majority of sparkling wine that he produces.
A Vintage Sparkling Shiraz is made in good years.
The Vintage wine is designed for a long life and therefore is made with the best Coonawarra Shiraz base wines from most years.
Vintage Sparkling Shiraz (much like Vintage Champagne) will live for 50 or 60 years on the yeast lees. When the wine is disgorged after this time, it is fresh and beautiful. The wines are heavy in varietal character. Shiraz and Merlot are used. Big, full base wines are made from these grapes; they have great depth of colour and fruit character. The resultant sparkling wine has a very full palate. A special formula expedition liqueur is added at the disgorging stage.
The NV wines will age and improve in the bottle for another three years, although the wine palate is set up for maximum balance at the time of purchase and therefore would be slightly out of balance at greater than three years bottle age.
As only the best quality grapes are used, the Sparkling Shiraz is promoted to go with food: generally at dinner with friends, or for specific occasions such as Christmas or Thanksgiving. As Sparkling Shiraz is a big style, the wine is promoted in association with game meats such as turkey, duck, kangaroo or goat. etc or strong cheeses (Stilton, blue vein, Gorgonzola). - Rumball Wines
