Winery:Penfolds
Region: Marananga – Barossa Valley
Variety:Shiraz
Vintage:2008

Your Wine Guy says:

“A debut vintage... awaiting the inheritance of those lucky to be born in 2008! A contemporary and compelling Barossa Valley Shiraz - mischievously playing in a zone somewhere between RWT and Bin 28.”Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker
Volumes of dark berry fruit seduce the nose with hints of chocolate and regional earthiness. Intense blue and black fruits flood the palate with classic Shiraz spiciness and some herbal notes. Ripe tannins show up but are beautifully integrated allowing the exceptional Marananga fruit to speak loud and clear; and it will continue to do so for many years to come. A stunning result from a tough vintage in the Barossa. I think the Bin 150 is destined to become a brilliant collector’s item.

Critics say:

“A new bin based on one of the greatest sub regions of the Barossa.
Classic blackberry, dark cherry, chocolate aromas and flavours, buoyant sweet fruit flavours and chocolaty ripe tannins. Finishes chalky firm. Will continue to develop in the cellar very well.”

The winemaker says:

“It was an early, compressed and fast intake in the last week of February and first week of March but we were fortunately able to pick a very large proportion of our premium fruit before the heat impacted - enabled by enough awaiting fermentation space to handle the accelerated and rapid intake. Much of our better fruit comes from older, self-regulating vines of lower yield… vines that physiologically ripen earlier. Retrospectively, quite opportune in a year with an ill-timed heatwave! The quality of our 2008 Bin wines is naturally also testament to the prowess of our viticultural team, including George Taylor, Adam Brown and Dean Willoughby - who were able to harvest some fantastic fruit and expertly handle the logistics of picking - enabling the fruit to arrive intact at the winery before the heat took its toll. Weighted-average vintage charts may not do justice to the South Australian 2008 harvest. Penfolds reds will punch above the average.” Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Colour: Impenetrable black core with a purple rim.
Nose: Wafts of soy (dark) & ulong (fermented) tea ascend. Oak is absorbed, allowing stylish Barossa fruits to weave their magic. Yet there's a lot more than only fruit - demi-glace / pan scrapings / charcuterie complexities... black pudding? And beneath? Aniseed, borscht, and a beetroot / rhubarb mix...rather than the expected red or black-curranted fruits.
Palate: Fresh and vibrant. Youthful. Texturally, a slinky, polished sheen massaged by very fine and grainy tannins. In the flavour spectrum, double-roasted black coffee beans meshed with an assortment of dark-berried fruits, violet & musk. Measuring high on the drinkability-scale - accessible, taut. Balanced. Buffed. Barossa! Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker
Food Matches: Rabbit loin, confit leg, vanilla linguini, braised pistachios, mild pancetta and apricot.

Winery/Label Information:

The Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz has Penfolds showing its hand at sub-regional expression.
The hamlet of Marananga lies very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor containing the famous Roennfeldt, Stonewell and Seppeltsfield roads and home of super premium producer Torbreck Vintners - where warm dry conditions and rich red soils provide the backbone to some of the region’s best known wines. The inaugural release of the Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz delivers a contemporary Shiraz alternative, framed by an equal mix of new and used, French and American oak barrels. Penfolds Wines
