Winery: Austins – Six Foot Six
Region: Geelong, VIC
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2008

Your Wine Guy says:

Six Foot Six Pinot Noir is a focused effort from the Austins sourced from their high quality vines in Geelong that are approaching 30 years of age. The 2008 shows good depth both on the nose and palate. Dark plums, some cherry and spice, the Six Foot Six shows good intensity and varietal characters while retaining more of an Old World style. Will drink well for about 5 years.

Critics say:

"I’ll tell you what: it smells and tastes like more expensive Australian Pinot Noir did about ten years or so ago, and for that I quite like it. There’s plenty of spice and baked plum and cherry with some beetroot earthiness. Almost a licorice sweetness and something cosmetic about it too. Plenty of flavour on a medium bodied palate with fine light dry tannin and just a little dried herbal bitterness. It’s a tidy sort of drink for the money. Not complex or long but obviously Pinot Noir."

The winemaker says:

Colour: Bright cherry to mid-red, gleaming in the glass.
Nose: Enticing, perfumed aromas of fresh plums, dark and maraschino cherries in league with a tamarind-led savoury complexity and a violet petal or two. All this saturates the senses in true pinot noir fashion; vivacious and alluring.
Palate:That momentum continues on the palate where a refreshing acidity details the varietal
characters fulfilling the promise of the bouquet. The cherry, plum and spice flavours
are supported by soft tannins in a structure as inviting as it is satisfying. As with all fine wine, all facets of this pinot noir persist on the aftertaste.

Richard and Pam Austin began their journey with wine 27 years ago with a five-acre vineyard, in Geelong, dedicated to making super premium wines for Australia’s best restaurants.
In the 1990s, the family purchased a large property near Bannockburn, in the Geelong region. Richard Austin set about planting of 150 acres of vines with the single-minded focus of producing the best value Pinot Noir in the world
The climate, the rolling slopes of this part of the Moorabool Valley and the soil combine in a terroir that supports the vines with first-class fruit the result. Terroir is all important.
The world's best wines are made from the world's best vineyards. The pinot noir produced by Austins argues consistency of style and quality. The fruit and, thereby, the wine has a distinct point of difference with its peers. That difference impacts your senses - you can smell it and taste it.
The premium quality, of the pinot noir, is augmented by the mix of six clones throughout the vineyard.
Austins vineyard, at Sutherlands Creek, includes one of the largest, family-owned holdings of Pinot Noir in Australia.
The property also has small plantings of riesling, chardonnay, pinot gris, viognier and shiraz, all of which produce exceptional fruit in the cool climate conditions of the Moorabool Valley, a sub-region of Geelong.
