Your Wine Guy says:

Very dark inky crimson red colour. The nose shows complex notes of ripe blackberry and mocha, liquorice and spicy vanilla. The palate is intense and full bodied without being overpowering and displays exceptional concentration and depth with mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, dark chocolate and blackberry and delicious notes of mocha and spice. The tannins are silky smooth and the flavours of liquorice, blackberry, mocha, and spice linger for over a minute. Brilliant.
97 Points YWG Drink to 2024+

Critics say:

“Deep colour; a surprisingly restrained bouquet, only revealing glimpses of the black fruit, licorice, char and violets on offer; the palate is powerful, but held in check by the tightly wound, focused and complex fruit; the tannins are plentiful and fine, and the acidity super-fresh, promising a long life.”
96 Points Drink to 2030 James Halliday Wine Companion

The winemaker says:

“This wine is a deep bold red purple showing exotic fig and plum sauce, mocha and black liquorice notes. The wine is dense and brooding, showing sweet Shiraz fruit concentration and fine seamless tannins. Long and lush through the finish, it has great integration, style and elegance.” – Kevin Glastonbury Yalumba Senior Winemaker

Winery Information:

Australia’s oldest family owned winery.
Yalumba has a wealth of exceptional vineyards at their disposal including vines that exceed 100 years of age.
The following information was sourced from www.yalumba.com

In addition to being sourced from a number of very old vineyards in the Barossa, The Octavius is matured in American and French oak 'octaves' of 100 litre capacity. It is the only red wine in the world that is matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by the oak lies in the wood which is seasoned at Yalumba's own on-site cooperage for three to five years before the octaves are crafted.
Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making.

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.

Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation.

Available wines from their range include:
The Octavius Shiraz
The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon
The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz
The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
The Virgilius Viognier
The Cigar Cabernet Sauvignon
