The 2009 Brokenback Shiraz is deep purple and quite bright. The nose is fragrant with some delightful red berry fruit and peppery notes mingling very well with balanced oak and a touch of leather. The flavours linger for a good amount of time on the palate and will continue to improve for the next 3-5 years and be in a good drinking window for the next 10 years.

The winemaker says:

Colour: Deep red/purple in colour.
Nose: An intense bouquet of plum and spice with supporting oak.
Palate: The palate is full yet soft with excellent fruit flavour and silky tannins. There is added complexity of plum fruit flavours combined with earth and spicy pepper characters giving the wine great length.

Winery Information:

Leogate Estate is the home of a long standing exceptional quality vineyard called the Brokenback Vineyard. This vineyard has for years produced outstanding wines under a range of different labels. The Brokenback vineyard was desperately sought by and split in two by joint owners the late inimitable Len Evans AO OBE and the late Hunter legend Murray Tyrrell AM. Leogate’s owners Bill and Vicki Widin finally amalgamated the Brokenback Vineyard in 2008. Leogate’s winemaker is Mark Woods formerly of Briar Ridge and Pepper Tree.
Leogate have recently won a number of Gold medals at the Hunter Wine Show and at the NSW Small Winemakers Show have won a Gold medal along with a Trophy as well as taking out a Trophy and Gold at the Boutique Winemakers Show. They have also debuted in the 2012 James Halliday Wine Companion with a 5 Star rating including wines at 91, 94 and 95 Points.
