Sourced from Margaret River vines that have been planted in a north-south direction rather than east-west, hence the label name of ‘sideways’.
The Madfish Sideways Shiraz is a deep ruby purple colour in the glass. The nose shows spicy dark cherry, dark plum and some toasty oak. The palate is medium bodied, displaying some pepper spice, dark plums and dark cherry with nicely integrated fine grained tannins.

Colour: The colour is an outstanding vibrant and opaque purple red.
Nose: The aromas are of dark ripe plums, blueberries and steamed fruit pudding.
Palate: The palate is rich and layered with satiny plum fruit supported by chocolate tannins and vanillan oak. There are also the regional hints of oyster shell and soy sauce adding complexity and a savoury edge to the gravely tannins, which finish long and are slightly chewy.
“New to MadFish Wines is the "Sideways" range sourced exclusively from specially chosen vineyards in Margaret River. The original plantings for MadFish's Margaret River vineyards were planted east-west, whereas Sideways vineyard blocks were planted with north-south orientation, hence the inspiration for the new label for MadFish, Sideways. These wines are produced using sustainable and organic viticultural practices while also using cartons made from 100% recycled material, and lightweight bottles.” - Madfish

The MadFish story begins in the far southern reaches of Western Australia where 15 kilometres from the quiet coastal town of Denmark is the picturesque Madfish Bay. According to local folklore, the bay’s tranquillity is broken when two tides meet. The fish confused by this natural phenomenon, can be observed leaping in the air as if in a state of complete madness.
The artwork for the label was originally designed by the late Maxine Fumagalli, a Noongar artist from Western Australia’s Great Southern, who had a deep love for the land and the people of the South-West region.
Her designs reflect the Aboriginal understanding that there is unity between land, sea, stars, animals and people, hence the inclusion of all elements in the label’s design.
The traditional aboriginal water turtle design on the label is a symbol of perseverance and tolerance - no doubt characteristics displayed by the fish in MadFish Bay.
MadFish are wines with an emphasis on enjoyment and drinkability. They are for people who enjoy the pleasures of life: family, friends, food and wine. The MadFish label was first released in 1992 with the MadFish Premium White, soon followed by the MadFish Premium Red in 1993.
Today a number of wine styles are produced including Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay along with some alternative varietals such as Pinot Noir and Carnelian.
These contemporary wine styles are made from cool climate fruit and are noted for their pure, fresh and clean characteristics in which the flavour of the fruit is the primary character.
In the spirit of Western Australia, MadFish wines are without pretension and without fuss.
Premium wine can only come from excellent fruit and it is this reason that MadFish's locations, in the heart of the Great Southern and Margaret River, were chosen.
The sourcing of this fruit from specific vineyards, and in many cases specific blocks on the vineyard, is one of the most important factors in the production of MadFish wines.
