Critics say:
“The 1982 is another superb example of that. One of the jammiest, most precocious Granges when it was released, it has never gone through a closed stage and continues to drink beautifully. A full-bodied, opulent Grange, it reveals an inky/purple color to the rim as well as a beautiful nose of crushed blueberries, blackberries, smoke, toast, roasted herbs, and road tar. This dense, plush, expansive, seamless, seductive 1982 has not changed much since I had it nearly a decade ago.
Grange, Penfolds’ flagship wine, is, by many accounts, the most renowned and world-famous wine produced in Australia, and these six vintages from my cellar all acquitted themselves well. These wines are almost always Shiraz, but many vintages include less than 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and there are cross-appellations blends from vineyards in the Barossa and McLaren Vale.”

The winemaker says:

Colour: Very deep, rich brick red.
Nose: Very ripe, sweet plum jam aromas. Vanilla and mint characters with a hint of leafiness.
Palate: Masses of delicious super-fleshy fruit throughout, very elegant and supple but undeniably a fullbodied wine with an assertive tannin finish.

The pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range, Grange is a rich, opulent, full-bodied Shiraz, destined for a long cellar life. The winemaking process involves great attention to detail; from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. The unique and distinctive Grange style is based on ripe Shiraz fruit and stylish American oak in fine harmony.

In Your Wine Guy’s experience, the fill level in the bottle is almost always the best indicator of the quality of the wine inside the bottle and so unless there was a significantly noticeable issue with the label or capsule we have not mentioned it.

Winery Information:

From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over nearly six decades so far. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.
Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses.
An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Grange is the quality standard against which all other super premium Australian red wines are judged. Penfolds Wines
