Critics say:
“This is considered a good rather than outstanding Grange, but I have consistently found this wine to be superb. A blend of 91% and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from a relatively cool growing year, this wine has full body and a gorgeously complex nose of coffee, crème de cassis, caramel, leather, and a subtle
hint of pepper and eucalyptus. The wine is very rich, still somewhat unevolved, with more new oak showing through than most vintages of Grange. The wine still has a dense ruby/purple color and seems to need at least another 3-4 years to reach full maturity, with a very sweet, chewy style but exceptional balance. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2018.”

The winemaker says:
Colour: Purple/red.
Nose: Sweet, dark chocolate/briary with hints of tar and roasted meat.
Palate: Richly flavoured with dark chocolate/berry fruit, loose knit but slightly bitter tannins and long finish. Good overall balance but is unlikely to improve. Will hold.
The last Grange to be entered in Australian wine shows, winning silver medals in 1981 and 1982. By this time Grange was firmly established in Australia and had nothing further to gain from show success. The wine was also too easy to recognise.

In Your Wine Guy’s experience, the fill level in the bottle is almost always the best indicator of the quality of the wine inside the bottle and so unless there was a significantly noticeable issue with the label or capsule we have not mentioned it.

Winery Information:
From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over nearly six decades so far. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.
Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses.
An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Grange is the quality standard against which all other super premium Australian red wines are judged. Penfolds Wines
