Critics say:
“A wine that seems to get better every time I have it, the 1978 Grange, a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, has turned out to be a blockbuster wine with extraordinary intensity, a voluptuous palate, notes of camphor, coffee, jammy black fruits, leather, and creme de cassis. As the wine sits in the glass, pepper and melted asphalt make an appearance. Very unctuously textured, thick, and chewy, this wine is soft, with a very succulent style. Its color is showing just a touch of amber as
this wine approaches its plateau of maturity. Drink it now and over the next 20 years.”

The winemaker says:
Colour: Medium red.
Nose: Complex, cedar/tobacco/gamey with plenty of sweet fruit.
Palate: Highly concentrated and beautifully textured wine with lovely, sweet, blackberry/smoky/earthy fruit and liquorice, fine grainy tannins and dry finish. Softening out well, but should continue to develop.
No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. The pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range, Grange is a rich, opulent, full-bodied Shiraz, destined for a long cellar life. The winemaking process involves great attention to detail; from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. The unique and distinctive Grange style is based on ripe Shiraz fruit and stylish American oak in fine harmony.

In Your Wine Guy’s experience, the fill level in the bottle is almost always the best indicator of the quality of the wine inside the bottle and so unless there was a significantly noticeable issue with the label or capsule we have not mentioned it.

Winery Information:
From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over nearly six decades so far. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.
Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses.
An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Grange is the quality standard against which all other super premium Australian red wines are judged. Penfolds Wines
