Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2008
Winery: Penfolds
Barossa Valley
Variety: Shiraz
Vintage: 2008

Critics say:

"A lovely Barossa Shiraz that possesses strong regional character, power, and elegance. The wine is intensely aromatic with blackberry/ elderberry/ praline aromas and roasted chestnut notes. The palate is rich, smooth and compact with generous blackberry/ dark chocolate/ liquorice flavours, plentiful savoury tannins and vanilla/ toasted oak notes. Although enjoyable to drink now, with its buoyant fruit sweetness and abundant flavours, the 2008 RWT Shiraz has all the hallmarks for medium to long term aging."
95 Points Andrew Caillard MW

"A sweet-fruited, supple RWT, built around powerfully concentrated, glossy stewed plum, rhubarb and blackberry fruit. Milk chocolate French oak (more than eighty percent new) provides a firm, fine tannin spine. There's an immediacy and appeal to its sweet fruit focus, making this the wine to drink while you await those 2008 cabernets to come back down to earth."

Redefines 'black'! Certainly on 25/1/11, foreboding!
Nose: An animated aromatic conversation with the darker elements of Barossa Valley Shiraz... "it smells black"! A coal-like blackness, replete with peat. Brooding. Concentrated. Thankfully, redeeming & alluring perfumed high-notes ascend - blueberry and dark plum, wafts of a ristretto coffee.
Palate: Dense & intense - with vibrance, unctuousness... delivering all the now-expected RWT cachets. "A blueberry pie in a 750ml glass package!" And yet the darkness prevails... inky, boot polish, freshly polished new black leather. Almost a glycerol/oily mid-palate - texturally close to a custard/chocolate eclair! A suggestion of oak and an avalanche of pronounced ripe & silky tannins complete the offer. A vinous 'Edge of Darkness'! Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2008
Winery: Penfolds
Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Adelaide Hills
Variety: Shiraz
Vintage: 2008

Your Wine Guy says:
This release marks the 52nd vintage of Penfolds St Henri Shiraz.
The 2008 St Henri greets you with a deep dark almost impenetrable red colour. Volumes of fruit from the dark berry spectrum seduce the nose, like blueberries delicately covered in chocolate mocha sauce. Intense blue and black fruits abound on the palate to with classic Shiraz spiciness and some herbal notes. Restrained oak allows the fruit to speak loud and clear and will do so for many years to come.

Critics say:
"Deep colour. Lovely fresh blackberry, dark cherry, herb aromas with some liquorice, paneforte notes. Well concentrated blackberry, dark cherry, praline flavours, fine-grained touch chalky-al-dente tannins. Finishes firm and tight. Beautiful richness and volume. Gentle tannin plume at the finish."
95 Points Andrew Caillard MW
"There is an immediacy to the vibrant and ripe fruit core of 2008 St Henri that makes it particularly enticing. The finest vintage since 2005 may prove to rank among the greats, certainly for the enjoyment it affords in the medium-term, even if it doesn't qualify among the longest-lived. Hints of soy and dark chocolate, balsamic and black olives linger with great presence and persistence. Tannins are admirably fine, yet in no way timid, providing great structural assuredness and textural definition."

Colour: Bright crimson rim, dense purple colour.
Nose: Anticipated praline/milk chocolate St Henri aromatic markers, replete with fruits —mulberry and boysenberry. Compliments of the vintage freshly squeezed beetroot/ginger juice and dried spices—bay leaf and sage. Large old vat-matured Shiraz—varietally and convincingly announced by way of a cold lamb/rosemary/marrow disposition.
Palate: Plush, fleshy and mouth filling—showcasing a cleverly woven texture and deceptive (fruit) weight. Nectarine and blood plum fruits courted by the largesse of big, ripe and round tannins. Maturation precursors already awoken, although yet to ascend/unfurl—fresh wallet leather, pan scrapings, ... Long and persistent. Polished. Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker
